Situata in Parcul National Apuseni, Pestera Focul Viu adaposteste al treilea bloc de gheata fosila ca marime din Romania (dupa Ghetarul Scarisoara si Avenul Bortig). Pentru a intelege de unde i se trage numele trebuie sa mergeti la pestera pe la orele pranzului, atunci cand razele soarelui, care patrund prin spartura din bolta, se reflecta in gheata dand impresia ca aceasta s-a transformat intr-un foc urias, un foc viu. Cunoscuta in vechile descrieri si sub denumirea de Pestera Eschimosilor, grota este alcatuita din doua sali. In timp ce Sala Mica adaposteste stalagmite, adevarata vraja se petrece in Sala Mare acolo unde se afla impresionantul bloc de gheata precum si trunchiuri de copaci care au cazut prin fereastra din bolta. In latura din dreapta se deschide un fel de crevasa, extrem de periculoasa, de 20 metri adancime care nu poate fi coborata decat cu ajutorul scarilor speologice.

Ca mai toate locurile frumoase din Apuseni, si Pestera Focului Viu sta sub semnul vechilor povestiri despre eroi de staturi formidabile care au trait in vremurile de demult in aceste zone. Una dintre legenda vorbeste despre o familie de uriasi pe care Decebal a adapostit-o in Apuseni cu conditia ca aceasta sa-i pazeasca aurul ascuns in pestera. Intr-o zi, oamenii care au venit sa fure comoara l-au momit pe mezinul familiei cu mancare otravita. Baiatul a murit, dar nici pradatorii nu au avut o soarta mai buna, gasindu-si sfarsitul sub bolovanii care s-au pravalit peste ei atunci cand au intrat in pestera. De durere ca si-a pierdut copilul, batranul urias a inceput sa rascoleasca pamantul si asa s-au format toate vaile, dealurile si pesterile din zona.

Pe la inceputul anilor ‘90, subsolul din zona Gradistei a fost scanat de un satelit rusesc. Ce s-a descoperit acolo ramane o mare taina caci, oficial, nu au fost date publicitatii toate rezultatele. Neoficial, s-a spus ca rusii ar fi descoperit situri antice si preistorice necunoscute inca in zona. Se cunoaste totusi ca s-a intocmit un dosar al acestor descoperiri, la Ministerul Lucrarilor Publice si Amenajarii Teritoriului si la Ministerul Culturii de atunci, care au decis efectuarea unor cercetari. Concluzia era una socanta: fortificatiile din zona Gradiste nu erau doar cetati dispuse pe culmile muntilor din jur, ci un imens ansamblu de 200 km patrati, foarte compact, care cuprindea o asezare militara, una civila montana, cu mai multe nuclee.

Practic, muntii fusesera taiati si terasati, apoi amenajati in incredibilul ansamblu. Mai mult, pe o suprafata de doi kilometri patrati, la o adancime de 8 metri, s-ar afla o asezare subterana. Prin anul 2001, Vasile Dragomir, general de divizie in retragere, care facuse parte din echipa de cercetatori, declara pentru un ziar central ca in zona Vartoape fusesera detectate, pe o suprafata de 4 km patrati, 75 de gropi conice, de dimensiuni diferite, precum si incinte paralelipipedice, modificate de mana omului, care comunicau intre ele, dar si cu platoul de deasupra prin drumuri antice. De la aceste incinte pleaca mai multe tuneluri spre muntii din apropiere, unele, prabusite partial, iar un singur tunel ajunge la sanctuarele de la Sarmizegetusa Regia, unde au fost de asemenea detectate incinte subterane. “Vreau sa subliniez ca in urma masuratorilor noastre a rezultat ca in zona Vartoape si in imediata apropiere se afla vestigiile cele mai importante ale complexului, inclusiv sanctuare, constructii cu o vechime mai mare decat cele de la Sarmizegetusa”, declara atunci generalul.

Conform studiului amintit, orasul subteran si suprateran de la Vartoape ar fi centrul complexului, mult mai mare decat cel de la Sarmizegetusa. Ca este asa, ramane sa o confirme viitoarele cercetari, dar noi ne-am convins de existenta tunelurilor, in acest inceput de mai cand, ajunsi la Capalna, la un pahar de vorba, un localnic ne-a povestit cum cu ceva vreme in urma s-a prabusit un perete de munte descoperind o parte de tunel, de putea omul sa mearga in picioare prin el, intarita cu barne putrezite din lemn.
